Back to services Vegetation and Habitat Surveys
Habitat surveys are generally one of two types, both of which follow standardised methodologies.
The Phase 1 habitat survey is used to determine the types of habitats across a broad area. These are then presented as a colour-coded map with key. Locations within the survey that have a diverse range, or interesting assemblages, of plant species are denoted by target notes.
The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) system is a highly specialised survey system, which determines the habitat classification based upon the proportions of plant species within quadrats. This methodology requires the surveyor to take several sample quadrats from the habitat and as such takes longer than the Phase 1 habitat survey methodology.
As many plants die back in the winter, vegetation surveys are undertaken during the growing season from May to July. Phase 1 habitat surveys can, in some situations be undertaken at other times as well. |
